USER GUIDE:
  • * Single asterisks indicate information is to be regarded as uncertain.
  • ** Double asterisks indicate information to be read in the light of LegalB Commentary on the legislation.
  • ... indicates  information is truncated for convenience, or unavailable for the momoent
  • Date references are formated as YYYY/MM/DD (being year, month and day).
  • Document references (the "DOCREF") are formated as "YYYY_NNN_SSS_YYYYMMDD_NNNNN_NNNN_NNNN_NNNN" (being Year of Act_Number of Act_Section of Act_Date of publication (which is presumed to be the cover date on the Gazette in which the Act or amending Act was published)_Gazette number_Gazette volume_Gazette notice number_Gazette regulation number).
  • Different versions of an Act and sections of an Act are identified in the YYYYMMDD portion of the DOCREF string, which reflects either the date of publication of the original Act in the Gazette (because only original versions of Acts are ever published in the Gazette in South Africa, later versions of Acts being published only by way of publication of amending Acts) or the date of publication of the Gazette in which subsequent amending Acts have been published. Different versions of any particular  Act can be found in the LegalB Overview for the Act.
  • Therefore, for example, the string "Act 2008_007_000_19980331" refers to Act 7 of 2008 published in a Gazette with the cover date 1998/03/31, and which the Overview of Act 2008_007 indicates is the first and unamended version of the Act. The string  "Act 2008_007_000_20021128" refers to a version of Act 7 of 2008 which as can be seen from the Overview, was published by way of publication of  amending Act 2002_040_000_20021128. By extension, the string "Act 2008_007_011_19980331" refers to section 11 of Act 7 of 2008 as unamended, and the string "Act 2008_007_011_20080417" refers to section 11 of Act 7 of 2008 published by way of publication of amending Act  2007_042_000_20080417.
  • Commencement rules used by LegalB to determine Timelines for Acts are those contained in the Act itself, and/or in such other Acts as may apply to their determination, such as as Act 1993_200_0000, Act 1996_108_000, Act 1957_033_000, and so on. Note that commencement rules applicable to an Act or any of its versions are subject to LegalB interpretation, in respect of which interpretation others may well differ.
  • Transitional provisions contained in Acts are not provided in LegalB Timelines and must be considered by users in considering commencement dates.
  • Please contact us for further information about our notations and how these can be used.
