OVERVIEW OF LEGALB’s SOUTH AFRICAN LEGISLATION

Our Law of Africa database has an extensive database of information on South African legislation.

This information is organised under headings that reflect the entities who currently have the power under South African law to make legislation. The hyperlinks in this table should take you to the various pieces of legislation in the database, or at least to information on the legislation.

Note that legislation made by entities which now no longer exist are organised under these headings as per their allocation by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act, No. 108 of 1996, and as required by legislation since that Constitution came into force on 27 April 1996.

Note also that the database includes legislation that has been repealed, except for repealed legislation made by entities set up by the various political regimes in power prior to the liberation of South Africa on 27 April 1996, which were not recognised by the international community and had no international standing. Thus, for instance, the repealed legislation of “independent states” such as Bophuthatswana, and the “homelands” set up for the various race and cultural groups in South Africa by the apartheid government are not included in the database.

South African legislation and other law has various sources, the contribution of each of which is still felt to a more or less degree, and may need to be explored and understood in conjunction with the information in this database.
