STEP 2: DECIDE WHICH LEGISLATION SEEMS MOST RELEVANT
DEMO: Your second step in deciding whether your company is in transgression of a legislation, is to read through the titles of legislation within the subject category you chose as relevant, selecting titles from the list which seem most relevant.
Our demonstration scenario is that you wish to find out whether your company, as an owner of land, is in transgression of legislation for not cleaning up a previous owner’s pollutants on land it owns, and you have selected the subject category “Environment” as the category which seems the most relevant
Take the second step above by going through the list of titles of legislation that fall within the subject category “Environmental”, and selecting the title that seems most relevant (Note that this list of legislation is a partial list, only used for the purpose of this guide.) If you read titles of legislation like you would read titles of books, you should not find it difficult to decide which is of relevance and of interest to your company, and which is not. Note that if the status of legislation is repealed, you would have to establish whether it was in force during a period that had relevance. For the purpose of progressing through this User Guide, we have chosen the National Environmental Management Act, No. 107 of 1998 as the piece of legislation that is probably of most relevance and interest to your company as that hypothetical owner of land.
