OVERVIEW OF OUR LAW OF AFRICA

Our Vision

Public access to the text of legislation is slow in coming even in this information age.  This is true despite the fact that millions of members of the public have the capacity and tools, never seen before, to explore, discuss, discover, and do their own research into where to find legislation and discover what it means.  This capacity is still being referred to in breaking news in Africa, and is still busy creating a sea change attitude shift towards democracy.

And in this day and age in which democracy is spreading its wings wider and wider, the fact that we live in an information age needs to be fueled and deepened by real debates between the legislature that draws up the legislation, the judiciary that must impose it, and the people upon whom it is imposed.  Only the people’s access to legislation will ensure that this happens.  People have the tools to do it, but need the text of the legislation and the structured support in discovering that text and its relationship to them, their friends and family.

Our Mission

Our mission is to ensure as far as possible that we play our part in making this all happens by facilitating access to legislation.

Our Objective

While our work in dealing with South African legislation is far advanced, our broader objective includes the utilisation of our surplus resources to build a wider database of legislation for Africa itself,  the “Law of Africa” database, by data-capturing text of African legislation and by structuring it so that it becomes a usable, functional resource for all.

Our Progress

The building of a database of African legislation is a work in progress, that is being built up over time, and is still incomplete, but which is already fairly substantial.  As and when a body of legislation becomes substantial, we make sure it is available through this website.

If you need the text of any particular legislation, please email us and if we cannot help you with the text, we will post your request on our site so the right people know you seek that text.  We will also check if  we already have the  text you seek or whether we can obtain it for you
