What is a STAQ? |
STAQs are generic tools that are used to identify transgressions of legislation and facilitate compliance. |
What are STAQs used for? |
A STAQ will report all transgressions it covers of the particular section of legislation it deals with. It will report the section of legislation transgressed, and the facts that resulted in the transgression. From this information you will be able to ascertain whether there has been legal compliance or non-compliance with the section of legislation to which the STAQ related. |
What will a STAQ tell me? |
A transgression is a fact or set of facts for which the relevant legislation makes no provision, and which would, if those facts existed, result in a non-compliance with that legislation. A transgression may therefore be considered to be the factual cause of a non-compliance. |

Under each of the titles listed in the ENVIRONMENTAL category, you will find an overview document to assist you to understand what that statute is about. Once you have identified which sections or a particular statute may be relevant to your purpose, contact us for a potential transgressors, for a STAQ price list, or any other assistance you may need. |
How do I identify which national South African environmental legislation is relevant to me, and to which STAQ I should therefore subscribe? |
Log onto this site using the user name under which you subscribed to that STAQ, then go to our STAQ Subscriber’s page (you will have been sent that link and the STAQ reference number by email on clearance of your subscription payment) and then click on the reference to the STAQ you subscribed to which you wish to enter. If you have any difficulty in this please contact us. You can leave and re-enter the STAQ at any time by logging out of our website, and then logging back in again. |
How do I access a STAQ to which I have subscribed? |
What you want to achieve will determine what your next step should be. This site can assist you to determine what legislation is out there, what it is all about, when it came into force or was amended, who it is relevant to, and whether you are in transgression of a section of any it. If you have gone through the STAQ User Guide, you should have some idea of how to get to the information on this site to work for you. However, if you cannot find what you are searching for or if you have any problem getting what you want from this site, please contact us for assistance. |
I have gone through the User Guide, but now do not know how to proceed? |
To complete a STAQ successfully, you need a fair knowledge of English, the factual knowledge necessary to answer “yes” or “no” to STAQ questions (or access to someone with that knowledge), and a basic knowledge of the internet. |
What skills do I need to do a STAQ? |
When you re-enter a STAQ, you can only proceed from where you last left off. If you wish to re-do a STAQ from the beginning, you would have to either re-subscribe to that STAQ under a different user name, or email a request to us to re-set the STAQ for you, so that you may enter that STAQ as if for the first time from the beginning, under the same user name. Note that we will only re-set a STAQ for a subscription user if we feel a genuine mistake in answering a STAQ question led to the need to re-set the STAQ. This re-set process is necessary to minimize the chance of LegalB’s legal rights in the STAQ being prejudiced. Note also that if we re-set such a STAQ, all information as to previous answers to STAQ questions and to online notes made while undertaking the STAQ would be lost. If the STAQ you are trying to re-enter afresh is a free STAQ, we suggest you merely register as a different user and enter the STAQ as that new user. |
