On rabbits caught in the headlights, and heroes in the shadows…

Like rabbits in the headlights, Eskom appears immobilized and paralyzed in the glare of their failure. The government, big business, and by their silence the majority and opposition parties, also seem paralyzed…

Now is the time for heroes: For someone who can see a clear path ahead to resolving the crisis. For someone who can peer through murky rhetoric, current ways of doing business, mirrors and shadows, vested interests, who can show us how the crisis may be the catalyst that could throw South Africa into the forefront of sustainable power generation and power use, which can be a model for the rest of the world to follow.

All the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle are there for those heroes to work with: The crisis itself, democracy, international goodwill, new technologies, wave power, pebble-bed reactors, wind power, methane, a sense of environmental responsibilities, a community who would grab the change with both hands, and more.

Somewhere in the throws of current community disbelieve, disgust and distress, are those who probably already have seen the opportunities and who are already grabbing the reins so that they can gallop urgently into that future.

Like all of us, I’m trying to peer through the headlights so that I can recognise our heroes, and assist them wherever I can…
